Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order is an action role-playing video game that was developed by Team Ninja at Koei Tecmo and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch in 2019. It is the third game in the Marvel: Ultimate Alliance series, following Marvel: Ultimate Alliance from 2006 and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 in 2009. It is also the first Marvel game that Nintendo has released on its own, independent of Activision (because the latter's publishing contract with Nintendo expires in 2014 and 2016). The protagonists of the video game are a brand-new team of superheroes who join forces to protect the universe from Thanos and the eponymous Black Order, who have set out on a mission to find the six Infinity Stones.
The gameplay is similar to a top-down dungeon crawler, with an emphasis on cooperative play, like in the previous two installments. The game may be played collaboratively by up to four players online with friends or random player lobbies, or locally on the same screen with a single docked or undocked Nintendo Switch system and up to four systems. To go through linear stages, battle opponents, and beat bosses, players select four characters from distinct Marvel families. Specific character combinations are required to obtain certain passive benefits. The controls for each character are essentially the same; they each have a leap, a light attack, a heavy strike, a dodge, a block, and four special powers. A particularly potent strike is released if all four party members synergize at once. Special skills can be synchronized with the other three members for a synergy increase. More characters are presently planned as free or paid downloadable material. Additional characters are unlocked via story advancement or optional Infinity Rift tasks.
Character progression happens as party members defeat monsters and bosses to earn experience points, just as in traditional role-playing games. By wearing ISO-8 crystals, characters can receive passive advantages in addition to stat increases. Additionally, there is a sizable skill tree where players can spend in-game money to upgrade their characters' stats permanently.
